Life Into Lyrics

I recently heard President Obama’s opening speech for the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the National Endowment for the Arts. When introducing “A Celebration of American Creativity” he described how the evening’s musicians turned “life into lyrics”.

At Youth on Stage, through our original musicals for kids, we are turning a kid’s life into lyrics.

In the opening scene of our adaptation of SCROOGE, we meet the young Master Scrooge, alone in the school room, watching all the other kids outside playing. He’s not included. Furthermore, for reasons Dickens never truly explains, his father has banned him from their family home. Outside, he hears the children singing “God Rest You Merry Gentlemen” and to that tune, he sings:

Amo amas amat amat

Amo Amas Amat

I love, you love, he loves, he loves

He loves me not.

Amo Amas I’ll try again

This time I will be good

Ohhh-tidings of comfort and joy…

Comfort and joy!

Ohhh-tidings of comfort and joy…

And our exploration from the Darkness to the Light continues…..
